From 2007 we can see an increase in international co-productions between Brazil and other countries, as well as a closer partnership between domestic production companies and domestic broadcasting companies. The growth in films production can be credited to public funding policy, which provided greater resources for the sector, and improved distribution of Brazilian audiovisual products fostering a more democratic, regionalized and cooperative environment, as well as promoting greater participation in the international markets.
The Brazilian cinema received numerous awards and was acclaimed at several major film publications and international film festivals. That year 78 Brazilian films were released for theatrical screening. The police drama “Elite Squad” was the highest-grossing Brazilian film in 2007. It’s phenomenal success demonstrates the power of cinema for generating social debate on such key issues as violence and corruption, and the unexpected events surrounding the release of the film drew attention to the issue of piracy. Two other enormously successful films were the comedy “The Big Family” and the feature-length animation “Monica’s Gang in an Adventure in Time”, which shows the diversity of the Brazilian film production.
The Brazilian film industry has shown considerable increase in production and great endeavour towards distributing its films both at home and abroad. Each and every film reveals different aspects of Brazilian culture, whose singularity resides in its wealth and diversity.
