Ireland in Brazil
University of Sao Paulo (USP), through the Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities (FFLCH), signed on 29 September 2009, agreement with the Embassy of Ireland for the creation of the Chair William Butler Yeats of Irish Studies.
The WB Yeats Chair aims to organize events related to research, promotion and dissemination of Irish Studies in the undergraduate and graduate levels, such as conferences, seminars, conferences and roundtables, as well as to promote interchange between Irish and Brazilian professors in the fields of Irish literature and culture.
The director of FFLCH, Sandra Margaret Nitrini, stressed that the creation of the Chair “is the successful accomplishment of 29 years of Irish Studies Program, which began at the University in 1980.”
The Ambassador of Ireland, Michael Hoey, highlighted that the State of Sao Paulo, and USP in particular, have been the centre of Irish studies in the country. He also said that the name of the new Chair could not be more appropriate. “Yeats is the major, if not the greatest poet of Ireland“.
