11 February 2010

Rio+20. The General Assembly of the United Nations, in its 64th session, accepted “with gratitude the generous offer” of the Government of Brazil to host the United Nations Sustainable Development Conference to be held in 2012, 20 years after the first one, also in Rio de Janeiro.

The objective of the international meeting, expected to receive heads of State and Government and other heads of delegations, together with partners from international institutions and non-governmental organisations, is to ensure the renewed political commitment to sustainable development, the implementation of the outcomes of the major environmental summits and address the new and emerging challenges, seeking alternative and creative ways of promoting sustainable development.

In parallel to the treatment of the contribution of the “green economy” for sustainable development and poverty eradication, the Conference will assess the implementation of the Agenda 21 and the Plan of Implementation of Johannesburg, marking the completion of cycle of 20 years of environmental negotiations and the beginning of new period of engagement of the international community.
